Verónica Mota also works as a community Mentor bringing theoretical and technological knowledge to a diverse spectrum of people. As Urban Arts Berlin she offers two workshops which can be booked in Europe with at least one month notice. Her mission is to share content and skills particularly among female identified subjects helping them to professionalized their creative approach to sound production. Both her workshops are a perfect introduction to the to sound art and electro-acoustic fields which offer the theoretical grounds needed to explore these disciplines further. Participants learn about history of music, creative experimentation, structure, the politics behind sound art and the basic skills to produce their own works inspired by the old pioneers.

In this introduction Verónica Mota will present the most fundamental historical background of electro-acoustic composition and sound art production. Participants will learn some theoretical aspects as well as some live examples of excellent composers who were pioneers in the electro-acoustic sound art field such as Delia Derbyshire, Halim El-Dadh & John Cage. In this journey we will also explore electro-acoustic music, tape music, and electronically generated (synthetic) sounds.

Female identified participants will learn how to produce their own sound works and how to professionally record audio samplers. They will discover the world of field recordings, as well as some of the and audio formats including also the more accessible ways to record sound using a cellphone. Afterwards, we will introduce this comes an introduction to Musique Concrète techniques and sound art production, and take a first look at Ableton Live software.

In this workshop we will explore historical and avant-garde audiotape cut-ups of recorded sounds and human speech.

• Firstly, we will introduce Dadaist poet Tristan Tzara’s technique from 1920, of cutting up words to
make poetry.

• After, we will listen to some examples of avant-garde cut-ups where words, audio tape & turntables operate together in unexpected ways. (P. Schaeffer, D. Derbyshire, W.Burroughs & Throbbing Gristle).

• Next, we will look at William Burroughs – The father of the audio tape cut-ups (Naked Lunch) who used this technic as as a weapon to attack the conventional logic, narrative and perception bluring the boundaries between reality and delusion. He attacked ‘middle class’ ways of narrative-based, lineal story telling.

• We will also learn how an Avant-garde experiment became a popular creative expression & entertainment use by many musicians and sound artists since the 20es up to date.

By the end of the workshop participants will have the historical background to approach sonic works with an expanded theoretical and practical perspective of the Avant-garde Cut-Offs on Audio Tapes. This knowledge will emerge as a composition using either text, voice overs, tape loops, samples and/or digital software.
